Hello all,

My first post so I thought I’d introduce myself.
I’m Adam, from Manchester in the UK. I’ve always have been interested in “Bonsai” trees however I never actually knew bonsai was a not an actual type of tree (Please forgive me!) Over the past few weeks I’ve been browsing this forum and trying to understand what is what.
I am now 24 and want to grow this for many many years to come; I’ve the patience and time to train something special. This for me is a lifestyle choice.

I still have a lot of reading to do both online in this forum and also maybe some of you gurus could suggest some good literature for a complete novice.

I have fallen in love with the look of this bonsai as an end result:

From my research so far this could be an outside acer palmatum – Japanese red maple. (Please can someone confirm this for me) I’m also unsure of the growing length i.e from seed to something approx. 1 foot should take … years (Please advise me)

Also is there a list of terms (list a glossary) with descriptions somewhere online as I don’t know my “mallsai” from my “prunes”

I’m gonna try and get to the Heaton Chapel Community Centre on 17 March, for anyone on here who will be going?

Thanks all, hope to be part of the group :)

Yes it is a Maple. Buy a book join a club, that is what I did a long time ago. Take a look at bonsai4me.com for species guides etc. The tree in the picture has been in training for a very long time.

1 foot maple from seed takes 1 year.

To grow that in a tree with the character of the tree in the picture. Guestimate.. 25 years if you know what you are doing. (Aged bark takes a LONG time)

Nice tree! I too am a first timer. FL, USA.

Like you, I've become addicted to the Art of Bonsai. You have an amazing tree! Looks very unique and cared for.

Not much I can offer except I see you care about your tree. That in itself is awesome. Anything alive reciprocates aknowledgement.

Best of Luck Bro!

JB
