Africa is a big place from temperate climates on kilimanjaro to full wet tropics in Kongo and dryland in large savannahs..

Normally you are best off using species which occur locally, or come from regions with similar climate.

Yes, you need to be a bit more specific, like what country are you in?

Kenya is fairly dry and hot, particularly in summer. I woul dlook into ficus & acacia species. But also some combretum might work. I think there is an african bonsai forum somewhere too. Although I would love to have some people from Africa on here (Especially in Kenya: I used to live/work in Samburu Game Reserve, in my previous life as ecologist), a specialized forum on Africa might be usefull..?

I would encourage you to join a bonsai club and take some classes. Also, do your research before you buy. Make sure you can provide the care needed / required to grow the trees you are thinking of purchasing. Then shop and buy from a local bonsai grower. Do not buy from a mall kiosk or from a roadside stand. Trees that come from a local grower, in most cases, have already acclimated to the particular climate / area where you live. And most importantly, remember bonsai are trees meant to be grown outdoors, and not to be confused with "house plants". Good luck. Rudy
