Samantha,

Soil where I live is sandy, very very dry (We just had a week without rain and I had to start watering the vegetable garden already).

I am not sure where exactly Auk lives. If he is in the West of the Netherlands, he is either on peat or clay.

and you can eat the clippings

What is your soil like? I might have to try that.

My soil ranges from tree to tree, but this one has about 30% organic, and a lot of lava rock, about 60%. When the days get into the 80's, I can water every other day. In the summer, it needs at least one watering a day, and only morning sun. I didn't completely bare root it, since I did take roots off, and didn't want to stress it out too much. You can still see some of the nursery soil on the base.

I've managed to keep rosemary fairly well in a flower bed before, but I've never tried to keep it in a pot, or as a bonsai. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Heavy sea clay, we're 5 m. below sea level.

I know. "You're going to do rosemary?"

Yeah... silly.

Wife(Bonsai artist): "Honey I am in the supermarket, do we still need rosemary for tonight's stew?"

Husband(very dumb): "Don't worry about it, I took some from that weird lucking plant on the porch"

Wife: "WHICH ONE!!!!

Husband: "let me send you a pic"

So I went a little nuts / stupid on the rosemary and began pruning it. By the time I took the unwanted branches off I ended up with this...

The trunk chop is visible, and most of the growth is on the outside. On the bright side,

BACKBUDS!!!

Gonna let the little guy fill back in and try again later this year or next year.

So, the little guy has been growing a lot. His bald spot is filling in nicely, and it loved the pruning. Wired a couple of branches to open it up, and I think I found the front I'll use
