Note that what is sold as Ginseng Ficus has not much to do with growing bonsi. Treat it as any other houseplant.

IF you are really getting into bonsai growin, and you are working on a pine that you would like to turn into bonsai, you have loads of alternative options for soil. I won't get into specific brands because most likely you have different brands in your stores.

True bonsai soil has to be able to absorp water and give it off, yet be coarse so that any water not absorbed by the soil particles, drains freely. I am using a combination of baked clay (Originally intended for cats) and a sort of fake lava (Originally intended as building material: Floor filler).

Just look for coars material (1-5mm dimeter) that absorps water, is stable in frost and can absorp water. Ideally, it is light-weight for obvious reasons.

What would be a good tree for bonsai . I want him to grow Indoors . Pines and junipers are designed more for yard trees.

Ficus is a more Gingseng very root of the plant there is not anything to shape . Can you recommend some other trees that would be a good bonsai

I have my ficus ginseng in regular potting soil and it is growing well. I don't know where you bought it, but the soil is really helping it recover from whatever conditions they had it in when it was in the store.

As far as bonsai soil, I don't know much, I'm new to bonsai, but my ficus bonsai is content right now with a mix that is mostly pumice and forest compost potting mix.

While no tree is an "indoor tree," Ficus are good to grow inside when it is colder, as long as they still get plenty of light. I have a grow light for mine.

I have 2 ginseng ficus'. I know they're not true bonsai, but I like them anyway. I use a mix of 75% aquarium gravel (1/8")and 25% potting soil. The plants drain well and are looking well. Ray
