Leaf size can be reduced, but the flowerings can’t, sometimes leading to out-of-proportion trees; a Wisteria does best as a relatively large sized Bonsai.
For Bonsai purposes, the most commonly used Wisteria is the Floribunda (Japanese Wisteria) and the Sinensis (Chinese Wisteria).
Position: Lots of light, either much direct sunlight or some shade. Protect the root system during the winter.
Watering: Water relatively often, as the Wisteria prefers lots of water.
Feeding: Use fertilizing in early spring, but reduce feeding once flowers start growing.
Pruning: Style the tree once the blooms have gone by. Regular pruning is fine to increase branching, but do not prune the tree if you want it to flower strongly.
Repotting: Repot young trees every year, older trees every second year, using a basic bonsai soil mixture. The root system can be pruned back aggressively.
Propagation: Use cuttings (in summer) or layering.
