What is Bonsai? |
The word ‘Bonsai’ is Japanese and literally translated it means ‘planted in a container’. Basically Bonsai is a collection of techniques to grow, train and care for a tree in order to shape it into a miniature but naturally and old looking tree. Throughout the ages Bonsai has evolved from plants being grown in containers into a well respected form of art.

Where does Bonsai originate from? |
Although the word ‘Bonsai’ is Japanese, it originated in the Chinese empire. Around the year 1000 BC the Chinese started the art of ‘pun-sai’; using special techniques to grow dwarf trees in containers. Originally only the elite of the society practiced pun-sai and the trees where spread throughout China as luxurious gifts. During the Kamakura period, the period in which Japan adopted most of China’s cultural trademarks, the art of growing trees in containers was introduced in Japan. The Japanese developed Bonsai to a great extent, and most well-know techniques, styles and tools were developed in Japan. Only recently, at around 1900, Bonsai was spread outside of Asia.
