Hi lads.
My dad got me a "bonsai" this spring from supermarket.
So I repotted it right away, and when I have seen that it is growing nicely after it, I made a plan for what I want to do with it.
I started with air layering, cause I want to make 3 trees out of it,
After nearly a month roots developped nicely so I could cut it today.
Here are the pics of the tree after purchase, the plan, air layering with roots showing on top of the substrate and pieces after cut.
Red line shows where I am going to air layer it next.
And after the main tree grows its new top a bit higher, I will cut it to make nice taper.
Hopefully new branches will develop - and if not - I will do the grafting.

2nd airlayering done.
So after 6 months I have 3 plants out of one and I could put them together in tiny landscape.
I still have some cuttings and I hope they will root, so there would be more plants in this one.
This landscape could be considered as a "training pot", cause I am really not sure about it´s looks even when it is not finished yet.
I will try to make it more interesting while the trees are in development and if it still won´t work, I will design something nicer.
The key I think are the stones and these don´t work very well in such a small penjing. Unfortunatelly my source of rocks - our river - has it´s surface pretty high for some time now covering up my favourite spot for collection.

6 months... wow. Have you had other air layering take that long?
I'm thinking of doing an air layering of the maple on my property and would like an idea of how long it would take and the best time of year to make it.

It was 6 months since I got it, individual layerings took about a month each.
I tried grape wine too this spring, it is in the pot now and it took about a month too, and I can see roots on a quince tree in our garden too.
That is gonna be cut after leaves fall.

So 1 month for the air layering to take effect? that's not bad. I would think that the warm season would be the best time. I also read that Sphagnum moss can have fungals that can hurt the tree. What did you use as a root hormone?

I use just regular bonsai substrate from supermarket mixed with the same amount of coconut fibres.
And I keep it moist at all times.
No rooting hormone at all as I was told by the guy from our local bonsai centre that he could sell me some but its bullshit

I read some online stuff about using honey as a root hormone and coconut husks as a moss substitute because it doesn't have fungi.
I realize things might be different here in the USA, but what type of substrate did you buy from the super market?
I'd like to get the best possible out come from my air layering.
