As seen in Omiya Bonsai Village.

Does the deadwood belongs to the tree or is it a tanuki?

I couldn´t be really sure, maybe only Clicio knows it for sure, but I believe this deadwood feature belongs completely to this tree. It doesn´t look like a tanuki to me. Besides... Japanese masters are really crafty when designing deadwood characteristics onto a tree.

No, not at all, it is not a tanuki, it's the real trunk!
I guess that's one of the reasons it was on exhibition at the Omiya Bonsai Museum

FYI:

"Whether that product can be considered a traditional bonsai is open to question, as implied by the Japanese name for this technique. In Japanese folklore, tanuki (狸, alternatively タヌキ), the Japanese raccoon dog, are shape-changing tricksters. [...] But this technique is not currently an accepted part of the Japanese bonsai tradition, and tanuki would not be displayed at a formal Japanese bonsai show."

:cheer:

Thats why I asked. Thank you for the story as well. A member of a bonsai club went to a japanese nursery where they had an open exhibition with repotting trees. While repotting a tree they realised that the tree was a tanuki. It was a fresh one,he said so it was still obvious. They asked if it was a tanuki. The master who were doing the repotting got angry and told them to leave :)

What is your own opinion about tanuki if I may ask?

There is so much that is fake nowadays... look in supermarkets and see how many of the ingredients you expect are in the product you buy, are actually cheap replacements.
For example, there is a certain type of cookie I like very much, that is supposed to contain a filling made of almonds and sugar. However, the cheap, supermarket ones contain ground white beans or soy beans.

I can give you loads of examples of stuff that is not what you think it is. I hate it. I do not like to be fooled.

If it is clear it is not real though, I'm not sure. Long, long ago I saw a juniper that was growing on a piece of wood, integrated with it, that was carved in the shape of a dragon. I thought it was awesome.
