First off there are some key things you need to look for in your material.
  • Health
  • Trunk(s)
  • Roots
  • Branching
Depending on where you live will also determine what species is in your area. Certain types of Junipers are always good starters, there are a few that aren't . Tell us more about your climate and if you can leave the tree outside? Or are you looking for something inside? Have you cared for plants before?

Juniperus chinensis 'Shimpaku' Is my favorite but hard to find in my neck of the woods.
Juniper procumbens nana are very popular as beginner bonsai tree
Rocky Mountain junipers are amazing but like a specific climate.

Procumbens nana is great but his branchs goes horizontal like juniperus horizontalis and that is good for cascade or semi cascade style, the juniperus shimpaku i like to see but never had the privilege to have one. the other i don´t know

We have a winter from 0 degree to 12 degree and in summer we can achieve up to 42 degree maximum. In fact I have buy a Juniperus, don't know the type that is. See it on the photos. Also I find some Pinus maybe I can grow them to.

In fact I have found a pine in a forest that seems could be a very good bonsai tree. I will update later some photos to give me an opinion how to act with her
