Hello - I picked up this small bonsai yesterday and was wondering if anyone can confirm what species it is? My guess is Fukien Tea.

What did the seller tell you it is?

It was a chain retail store and this was in the garden center. There was no indication as to the species.

OK, after surfing the web I now know it is a "mallsai"and quite possibly a Ficus. I also know that because of the "mallsai" label it is not a Bonsai (yet). I am hopeful that I can train it to be a true Bonsai someday. Based on what I've read today I will definitely have to re-pot into a shallow dish. But first I still would appreciate some assistance in identifying the species. Ficus or Fukien Tea?

No. Your first guess was right. Carmona's have a pretty specific leaf shape, which is visible in this leaf:


Also, the white specks indicate it's a carmona.

Hint:
If you buy a plant, make sure WHAT you buy. If the seller cannot tell you what it is, it's probably not a quality plant. If you do not know what you're buying, you won't know if you can give it the proper, required care.

Use a free draining soil mix ( you can buy Boon mix over at Amazon), water your Fukien tea tree when the soil feels dry, put it outside if it's not freezing (frost is a plant killer), give it plenty of light, and let it grow.
