Is my tree dying?

Hello,
I'm new to this forum, and to bonsai as a whole. I have had a Chinese elm now, which I believe to be about 9 years old, since April. I've noticed recently all the green buds that were on it, had disappeared. I done the bark test and scrapped a bit off the main trunk towards the bottom. It was brown underneith. I started to look further up the tree to see if I could find life. At the top under the bark it is green. Is my tree dead, or dying? I can provide photos if needed. I'm just really worried about it.
Many thanks in advance.

Nice pot.
Tree looks dead but if there's green, there's hope.
The humidity tent technique could help it resprout in the Spring.

Thank you. I love the pot too. Sorry to sound like I'm asking a stupid question but what is the humidity tent technique? How does it work and should I start it now?

When in doubt, ask leatherback.

Still hard to tell. I see green bits where apparently you did a scratch test. I see brown patches, lower on the trunk, where you may have done a scratch test as well. If that's the case, and it was brown like that, the tree is dead.
