I know it's going to be difficult without leaves, but please give it a go:
The main trunk is about two feet tall. Does this looks worth collecting?

Not easy for sure. Giving info about locality might make it easier. Whear are you and the tree?

An oak, maybe Quercus Rubra. But that's a very, very wild guess.
Doesn't look very useful for bonsai.
