Hey all, I've just planted 5 new bonsai seeds (japanese red pine, rocky mountain pine, Norway spruce, blue jacaranda, and a royal poinciana) I've been trying to do as much reading as I can but I'm not finding much on seedlings. I have a couple questions.

1. I have multiple seeds in one pot. At what point should I separate them if more then one healthily sprouts?

2. At what point should I start fertilizing? And when they are so young is pellet or liquid better?

3. I live in Florida, currently all the plants are inside. We have a screened in porch but we are scared of insects getting to them when they are young. Is it better to keep them inside while they are still young or should we think about pesticides?

There is no thing as bonsai seeds. That is your first lesson.

At least the norway spruce needs to be outside in the winter, if there are such thing in Florida. For the other Ones i cannot tell.

Investigate thourogly what the conditions is where the trees come from and try to mimic that as Good as possible.

If you are serious about bonsai, get some nurcery stock that are suitable for your climate to work on. They Will sawe you a lot of years.

The poinciana and jacaranda will live here and do fine outside come spring. I'd leave em inside under 75°.

Did you sacrafice poinciana seed then soak for 24 hours ? I know it's necessary to get them started

I did soak the seeds in 75° C water and let them cool down in the same water for 48 hours.
They all sprouted without scarification.

Hey! Fun fun fun!
I plant mine out when they are really crowding. For me, often that means at the end of the season. But if I feel ike doing work, also in mid-summer I have been known to take seedbeds apart and plant up individually. It all depends at how carefull you are, and how experienced. The bigger the seedling, the less of an issue it is to loose a part of the roots!

Fertilizing.. I use both liquid as solid. However, I never use pellets; Mine are more fine grained. I would guess I would use a liquid initially as you can better dose & spread.

Tough one. I do not worry about insects, but rather mice. As such, my seeding trays are coverd with rocks in winter, and in spring I will put them under a wiremesh. If you keep them inside it will be dark,so you get lanky seedlings, which is not great. I guess I would put them ouside and find a way to keep insects off. Insecticide is not going to work defending it (Except for maybe sucking insects)
