Help!

I've had my port jackson fig for nearly a year now (4 years old) and I'm lost on how to prune it to grow smaller leaves!
What i have been doing is trimming leaves off the branchs which has stimulated the branches to extend longer than the trunk.
Im afraid the trunk wont support the length and weight of its own leaf-less branches.
