here are the results of my first ever wiring attempt. This is a sourwood tree(Oxydendrum). I got it at a discount store for $5.00. I cut off the dead top before I even put it in the car.
It's so ugly from the side, but I couldn't resist it....for $5.00 :)
I wired a new leader and this branch about a month ago.today I noticed that the branch had grown considerably so I took off the wire. Results were pleasing.I will wait for a few more weeks before I take the wire off the new leader.
Anyway, Here are a few pictures of the tree.....
Picture 1 is the night I got it.
Picture 2 is a few days later with the new leader, before wiring the branch/
Picture 3 is the branch with a bend after wiring.
Picture 4 is a close up of the branch.
This may be old news for some of you, but I'm so new to this, that anything I do is a a big deal...and there's no one locally to share my enthusiasm with. haha
Sorry folks :)
Again, it's not much....but it's mine :)

Nice work Pinkham. Looking forward to see the progress. Not sure what you plan to do with the tree. Did you consider nipping the tips out of the side-branches and start creating some structure?

I don't know what to do with this tree. I will punch the branches before they get too out of control though. All of them except the new leader.

just pinched off the branches and wired the branch on the other side to match the bend of the freshly un-wired one :) Then did a little clipping of leaves. here it is.

Hi Lance,

I luv your gutziness and willingness to take a risk. $5.00? Hah...what a steal! Way to go! I like what you've done with the wiring. Good job! One suggestion which I have learned here on the forum is to avoid having branches growing directly opposite each other on the trunk. Instead try to stagger them so one is lower on one side of the trunk and the other is higher on the other side of the trunk. This makes for a more interesting yet, balanced looking bonsai.

You never have to apologise for sharing your work here, Lance. It's never 'old news'. I am new to the art of bonsai and seeing your work is inspiring and encouraging. Yeah, it's a big deal! And once I find a place to buy bonsai soil, you can bet I'll be doing the same. :woohoo: Your excitement and enthusiasm is contageous and wonderful! As for the experienced in bonsai, your work gives them a chance to share their knowledge by offering suggestions and to praise and encourage you as well. No matter how experienced one is in anything is life, there's always something new to learn and it may come from one of your ideas. So please...keep on keepin' on! ;) Thanks for sharing!

Leslie,
Should I Wire the right branch so it doesn't mimic the left side? The branch on the right is higher than the one on the left by at least an inch. Is that to close? I'm not sure how this tree would back bud so I don't want to chop off any branches. ( there are only 4 right now).
I'll attach a profile picture so you can see it. It's pretty ugly.
This is pretty much the trees only option of ever being decent. Haha

Hi Lance,

It is difficult for me to judge from your photos and by the fact I am a beginner myself so I am hesitant to make a call like that.

Have you decided on which style of Bonsai your tree might be most suited for? Here is a link from the website that explains the different styles.
www.bonsaiempire.com/train/bonsai-styles

Also if you go to the Main Menu in the upper left hand corner of this page, click on "Train" then click on "Pruning". This explains the placement of branches and much more. It is also helpful to check out images of other Bonsai trees such as in the Gallery. Hope this helps. :)
