My moss tray complete with tree is outside all the time. I have it so that it gets sun in the morning then shade. I water once a day. I think the reason not to fertilize is that moss has no roots, and so does not need nutrients.
I will try to do a picture of mine.

good list bob you may have missed one lol..

Mosses are not considered vascular plants the way most flowering plants, conifers, ferns and horsetails are. Mosses are bryophytes, which means they have less developed conductive tubes. This causes them to remain small and to require moist environments to survive. Mosses are usually only one cell thick, and lack true roots, instead attaching to the earth or objects with rhizoids. There are more than 8,000 species of moss worldwide, more than 700 of which can be found in the Pacific Northwest of the Unites States.

also a note to remember..

Sphagnum moss has been implicated in connection with a fungal disease called Sporothrix schenckii, which occurs when moss infected with the fungus comes in contact with an opening in the skin. Gardeners and others who work with sphagnum moss need to wear gloves and long sleeves when handling the product.

Sorry for dragging this thread up. I have a bag of sphagnum moss which I bought years ago from a garden center (pic below of the type of bag) and I have been thinking a lot about it so I was searching for threads for it to use instead of making a new one which would be pointless.

I hear about the danger of getting that fungal disease which scares me a little, but at the same time I hear comments from people around the internet that the dangers being rare. One poster on this site says she has been using it for 20 years and it hasn't done her any harm. forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/137333...ss-as-growing-medium

What could I do with it? It seems it can't be used as an alternative to something like Akadama or Kanuma but can be used as a top dressing and to help with airlayering.

Yes, I read that with great interest but for some reason I prefer to converse with someone who knows about it than read about it from someone who knows about it.

What types are best for air-layering? The air-layering info on this site and within The Complete Book of Bonsai (Harry Tomlinson) and Ken Norman's The Complete Encylopedia of Bonsai is brilliant and it set's it out in such a way there is no reason to not get it. So simple to comprehend. But I don't think I have ever come across info about the best trees to air-layer. I think it may be a good idea to get a tree that isn't good for bonsai and try your hand at that rather than asking a stranger if you can airlayer a branch from his cherished tree.
