Hi all, with winter settling upon us, I am curious to learn what the differences are ion wintercare around the world. Soo.. Please share what your methods are for getting your trees through winter, and perhaps where you are, and what the typical winter will bring in terms of weather!

I live in Pistoia, near Florence. Our winters are rainy, we got strong northern winds and typically we have 15/20 nights per year with frosty nights. The lowest temperature I can remember (I'm 23) was -11 Cº a couple years ago. I let my trees uncovered (chinese elms, junipers and some pines) against a west facing wall, and they do fine.

We've got kind of a changing weather here in Hungary but nothing comes close to the extremes. Temp changes between -10 and +10 degrees, mostly sunny with foggy nights.
I prepare my trees by reading a lot as most of my trees are planted in my garden :)

I put my trees in a greenhouse, during daytime the door is open. at night i close the door. if the temperature drops past -1 C i put my Punica granatum/morus alba in my gardenshed the centrale heating is in there and it's slightly warmer.

I live in Ohio, USA . It's not uncommon to get temps below freezing for weeks at a time. My bigger trees that are in training or nursery pots stay outside but out of the wind. My smaller trees go in an unheated and vented greenhouse. I have a few tropical plants I bring inside to a south facing window so they get light.

The trees that need frost protection, but more light I have in a makeshift "greenhouse" on my from balcony, which gets a fair amount of light in winter and the trees that don't need light, but need temps to generally be above freezing, I have in a similar makeshift "greenhouse on my back balcony, which has stayed above freezing even though it has been close to -5 C these last few nights. Originally, I wanted to keep the top open of the back greenhouse, but I changed it.. as I saw that this winter would be pretty cold.

The first pic is the front "greenhouse" which is basically made around an Ikea shelving unit. The bubble-wrap goes all the way around the unit.
The second and third pics are the other "greehouse" the fourth was with the top open...

minus 9 yesterday morning, some trees in cold room where it is still freezing, some on the ground in the corner of the house, some still on display on the support wall over 1 meter tall.
We get - 20°C at times in winter.

Ikea is a store that sells cheap furniture... which is usually, despite the detailed instructions, quite difficult to assemble... unless of course you have plenty of experience with their stuff. They also sell cheep ficus ginseng microcarpa... and call it bonsai:
