Hi,
I'm very new to bonsais. As a matter of fact, I bought the nashia inaguensis yesterday. I've noticed that there is white powder on the trunk. I think it may be due to hard water (although I am not aware of such problems in my region). It looks powdery and rubs off a little when I rub it with my finger. What do you guys think? How do I fix it? Is it something else?

If it is something else, I don't think I can return it. They offer no warranty on the bonsais. Maybe they would help me out because it is a very recent buy.

I've attached a picture

I would assume by the picture that you have hard water in your area. That look like nothing more than hard water deposits.
I would brush the trunk and nebari with a soft toothbrush and a mix of 50/50 water/white vinegar. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then rinse it off by watering the tree.
Do not use this method on the leaves.
Also, it will return if you continue using you hard water.
Do not water with this mixture due to the ph level. Nashia inaguensis Like a ph of 7.0 the vinegar is acidic and will lower that number.

Seems hard water to me.
Bonsai Bender, I have found this info about Nashia and vinegar, perhaps it is not a good idea (I have no experience, just trying to help):

"As the bark ages on this plant, it can often become black from accumulated dirt and algae. A light pressure from the spray of a garden hose will easily remove it; or use a soft toothbrush with soap and water. Do not scrub hard.
Although frequently used to clean plants, DO NOT use vinegar during Bahama Berry bonsai care. It can cause die-back or worse."

As for this tree, some useful info here:

It is due to the ph level as I mentioned. Vinegar has a ph of 3 Nashia like a ph of 7 but as long as you don't let a bunch of the solution soak into the soil you will be okay. If push comes to shove 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 32oz of water.
