Hey Si, Pests are much more likely to get on weakened trees, in the little I know about Maples, is that they need aa fair amount of sunlight, so it can thrive nicely before autumn comes in, only minding about covering it if temp. rises above 30ºC.

I used to live in a appartment, now I live in a home, back in the day, my plants was all on a balcony, yet I had a lot of problems with Cochineal and Aphids... Nowadays, ALL my plants are outside spreaded tru' the garden/patio, alongside with fullsize trees, grass and others... Still, I have close to zero cases of pests...

What about them? I get pests from time to time on my indoor plants and on crops in the greenhouse. On my bonsai I have only experienced pine aphids. Didnt do anything about them, they died in winter and havent come back for 3 years.

My maples all sit outside in full sun, and most of July and August the temps were 35 every day. There may be some species that want lower temps, but it seems the more sun they get the better they grow, and my main problem is that they grow too much. Such a problem to have, right?

One issue with full sun is that it can heat up the pot, and that can bake and kill the roots. If the pot is dark you might want to put some shade over it.

Sorry for my enthusiasm, but I'm in love with this tree, I know most of you are tired to see that spring announcement on Acers, but some of you may understand my happiness, as it is the first time I see with my own eyes... Hahahah

Thanks for all advices. I'll do my best with it.
Btw... I've been monitoring the dead nubs, And the are not advancing. :D

Hey people!
Imagine a happy person... That's me about this Acer.

It's shoots are now reaching 4 internodes long, haven't pruned, pinched nor cutted the nubs that need finishing yet, I've read that spring is not a good moment to do large cuts.

> I've slided to a slightly bigger pot as it began to swell (brown to avoid too much heat), since the pot it came on was too small (1 Liter), used just as a selling container.

> I'm fertilizing with organics, and it seems to be loving it.

> I applied preventivelly spider mite incetiside, since the seller told me that it is a common issue with maples, mostly at summer, but that applying on spring would do no harm.

I'm just dropping by to share it with you guys, and ask if am I missing something, like stimulate a leader for example.
I know that at this point it's about learning how to make it thrive, but I don't wanna realize in a year or two that there was something I should do back in the day, and I missed.

Cheers!

Hmm, since you asked if you missed something. It is not possible to treat for mites prevetevly. That is just overuse of toxic chemicals and have no effect whatsoever on future infestations.

Good luck with your tree.
