Got this one 2 years ago at an end-of-year sale, for half the price. I arrived late, a lot was already sold, not much interesting left, really, but it seems this plant was overlooked (or maybe simply no one liked it).
Id did not produce flowers last year, only buds that did not open.
Repotted it, but did not do much else with it yet. It is doing quite well this year. The flowers took long to appear, but they are staying on pretty long as well (and yeah.. I should probably have removed them, or part of them, but well... I like flowers)

Nice trunk. Guess it is about time to cut back the branches on top, and build some side-branches?

Yes - but after it has flowered.

Nice trunk...

Yes, it is nice. I've been looking for one myself, lots of Azaleas here, but almost all with very skinny trunks.

Yes, I love its flowers also. They flower now in Autumn and throughout the winter, I guess they like colder weather (cold for Brazil, I mean 18 to 5 degrees at the lowest).

Yeap.
Some like that with very long necks, others with foliage low on the trunk, but...
All of them skinny.

That too - but after flowering is simply the time to prune:
"Immediately after flowering the wilted flowers and ovaries are cut off or pinched by hand. This point of time is also favorable for all other pruning and trimming works"
www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/azalea

I have some other azaleas too (ordinary nursery ones, taking long to develop a trunk), they flowered weeks ago. Guess it depends on the variety.

Is this yours?
I am wondering - as Azalea is basally, not apically dominant, how come it has such long trunks without side branches?
I guess you can cut this back a lot?

Was that one dug out of the ground? I've picked up a couple long suffering azaleas in pots that ended up with really nice gnarled trunks. Maybe potbound ones fatten up better.
