I want to cut the branch circled in red off my ficus. I think it will open the tree up more and it will look nicer. My only hesitation is that it's a big branch and if I cut it off it will effect the health of the plant?

Ficus can take a lot of abuse, it won´t even notice this.

It wont harm the tree. I do not however see why you would do this. Lower branches are normally desired when building a bonsai

I would actually keep only that one branch for a new terminal and airlayer the rest on top of it, but maybe tommyboy has his plans with it :)

I had considered cutting a few branches off it and turning it into a wind swept style or cutting the trunk right down and starting from the start with just a stump
