I am starting my first bonsai tree. I have chosen a Blue Moon Kentucky Wisteria (wisteria macrostachya). I am mulling over whether to grow it in a regular pot for a while or to repot it in a bonsai pot. I pruned a few branches to contain it a little. It has a strong trunk which is med-small in size. I plan on pruning and wiring it when the leaves drop in the winter. Is it ready to go into a bonsai pot?

If you post some pictures, we can have a look.

What you call medium sized, might be a sapling in our eyes.
If you have to ask, it is not ready for a bonsaipot, I am pretty sure.

I would plant it in the ground and let it grow. Anythin with a trunk less than 5-10cm is very thin for wisteria: The flowers and leaves are huge. Als lalthough it might make a nice ornamental, it will not really do as bonsai?

Clicio, most of the leaves are at the ends of the branches. Are you saying I should trim it how I want it now? If I do that there won't be leaves left.

No, I am not saying that.
IF this wisteria were mine, I would wait for the right time and chop it down to create a more dense and short tree.
They are very difficult to style, by the way. Unpredictable and wild.

Once in a bonsai pot will the trunk thicken over time or does it need to be thick when you pot it?
