well, good news to report, the juniper is doing great and our mild winter was easy on everything and spring is starting its dance around here.
Actually had an arborist out here last week because I had an invasive tree to take out and some monster firs to care for and he took a look at it and mentioned that it looked like it was waking up and had really robust even growth. keeping the pot shielded from the bulk of the rain was a great move, it stayed evenly lightly moist and the top still got to be in an area where it got bright light, fresh air, and clean rain.
I took some time and went in and cleaned out all the dead twigs and needles and the branches that clearly crossed over and tangled things, just the minimal basics. It is utterly beautiful even if it has years to go. This is likely the only real work I will do on it this spring, thankfully I have many other plants to entertain myself with.
**the white chalk is marking the natural existing Jin that was there when I got the tree in the fall, some of it has clearly been dead for more than one season. none of it is fresh or made by me, there was so much there, there is no need! (though I can see where I might possibly do Shari a few years down the road.
I was marking it to get a feel for how much there was since each branch, both live and dead wrap around and thru each-other so much, it gets pretty convoluted.
