Moss will keep soil in, not "muck" that is for slabs.

doesn't the moss keep the soil too wet? I take it off of every tree i get that comes with it.

It depends on what you use for substrate

I had also this problems until I saw these videos. There are way too few videos explaining the top dressing.
1. Bonsai Mirai - Thank you Ryan Neil!
(skip to17:32 for the top dressing part)
2. And then I saw this genius video on how to apply green moss the right way, IMHO

Until this method I tried to plant moss slabs straight on top of the soil mix, which gives you more problems - Unknown soil, which will fall off and will be flushed inside your bonsai soil mix, glogging it. Worms or other bugs inside the slabs you can't see. And of cource the slabs are mostly so thick, you have to dig them in the soil mix or leave them as strange chunks. You could also sift the slabs but you still get the unknown soil in your pot.
Regarding to the watering - you need a watercan with a very good rose.
This is 1-1,5months and I applyed the green moss only here and there. I didn't cover the entire top layer as I did not have so much green moss.

Sorry for the late reply, haven't checked this post for quite a while.
But thanks for the elaboration! I will try some stuff out when repotting early spring!
