"Help! My Bonsai tree is dying!" Unfortunately, we get cries for help quite often on our forums. So we created a how-to guide on reviving a dying Bonsai. I'll take you through all the steps to rescue your bonsai.
In this article we'll help you pick a good Bonsai tree to begin with. Choosing the right tree species depends on where you intend to place your Bonsai - indoors or outdoors.
With relatively simple material we can sometimes create very nice Bonsai trees. In this video we show an initial styling of a young, affordable Juniper tree.
The Rhododendron genus contains about 1000 species, of which especially the Satsuki azalea (Rhododendron indicum) and Kurume azalea (Rhododendron kiusianum and Rhododendron kaempferi) are commonly used for Bonsai.
The Wisteria is a strong, fast growing deciduous vine with alternating compound leaves. In spring it produces long drooping clusters of bluish-purple fragrant flowers. The genus wisteria comprises less than 10 species, most of them native to China and Japan and two native to North America.
The Malus genus consists of approximately 50 species and a large number of cultivars. For bonsai, crabapple species are preferred, with nice small fruit in different colours and shapes. Often the crabapple is simply referred to as 'Apple'. In spring they produce beautiful white or pinkish flowers with five petals and in autumn the beautiful fruit decorate the tree.
In this section, we'll take a closer look into tree-species that are used for growing Bonsai, and Bonsai tree types. Each tree species has specific requirements for its cultivation, training, and care, so Bonsai tree identification is crucial to take proper care of your tree.
A common misconception about Bonsai trees is that they should be kept indoors. Most Bonsai should be placed outdoors, where they are exposed to the four natural seasons just like normal trees are. Only tropical and subtropical plants can survive indoors where temperatures are high and stable throughout the year.
Premna is a genus of approximately 200 tropical or subtropical tree and shrub species which belong to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and are widespread in Africa, Southeast Asia and northern Australia.
The Ficus genus belongs to the family of mulberry plants or Moraceae, and it’s the most popular indoor tree species for Bonsai beginners. They can be found on every continent in the tropic regions and are very suitable for indoor Bonsai.
The Fukien Tea tree is native to parts of Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Australia, but its name comes from its place of origin, Fukien or Fujian, China. In China, Fukien Tea bonsai trees are very popular for Penjing and in western countries, it's often an indoor Bonsai tree.
The juniper genus is made up of about 50 to 70 different species within the cypress family. They are evergreen coniferous trees or shrubs, which are very popular for Bonsai. Junipers can have two types of foliage, needle-like, and scale-like foliage.
The Chinese Elm is indigenous to China and south-east Asia. In its native environment it can be a mighty tree reaching heights of up to 80 feet (25 meter). It develops a fine branch ramification with small leaves, which makes it a very suitable Bonsai plant.
For Bonsai, pines are especially popular and many people even regard them as the most typical Bonsai trees. Pine trees are evergreen, coniferous resinous trees with needles that appear in bundles of two to five.
Originally from the dry regions of South Africa, the Dwarf Jade is a fleshy, soft, woody small tree that grows up to 3m (10ft.) It has a thick trunk, but a fine branch structure with thick green oval-shaped succulent leaves.
The Japanese Maple, otherwise known as Acer palmatum, is originally from Japan, China, and Korea. It owes its botanical name to the hand-shaped leaves with five pointed lobes. Palma is Latin for palm, as in the palm of your hand.
The pomegranate is a small deciduous tree or shrub with narrow oblong leaves, trumpet-shaped red flowers and large round red fruit. Those are covered by a hard pericarp and contain a great number of seeds, each covered by a tasty red aril.
水石 - Suiseki is the Japanese art of stone appreciation, which values aspects like stability, longevity and immortality. Formed through time by wind and water, stones can take several sizes and shapes, reminding us of natural objects.
Trees can grow for thousands of years. Bonsai trees, if well kept, can also become very old. This Ficus Bonsai is estimated to be one thousand years old, one of the oldest Bonsai trees we know. The tree was imported from Taiwan and is now part of the Crespi Bonsai collection.
Bonsai are living works of art, some famous trees are hundreds of years old. These trees are priceless and when for sale, very expensive. But at the same time, we can also purchase Bonsai at a local garden center, for just a few bucks.
Aqua Bonsai is using the technology of hydroponics (a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil). It takes time for the trees to adjust, but the creator has several trees growing in only water.
A Bonsai growing on or in a rock (called "Seki-joju" and "Ishisuki" in Japanese) is a highly dramatic depiction of nature.
An overview of some of the world's most beautiful Bonsai trees, in this top 20 movie created by Bonsai Empire. The video is a collection of places we have visited in the past years.
In this video we show unique Bonsai trees that we have filmed visiting the main international Bonsai exhibitions. The creators of these trees are looking for new and innovative ways to display this ancient art form - do you like these designs?
The forest style (in Japanese "Yose-ue") is one of the most popular styles of Bonsai. Instead of creating and displaying a single tree, with a forest we create a complete landscape.
小品盆栽 & 豆盆栽 - Shohin means “a small thing”, indicating it being even smaller than Bonsai. Although no exact rules were ever formulated, a tree is considered to be a Shohin Bonsai when under 10" (25cm) tall.
Although Bonsai is a Japanese word, the art of growing these miniature trees originates in China, where it is called "Penjing" or "Penzai". Penjing are miniature landscapes, displaying a combination of rocks, trees and figures - though increasingly single plants are shown in China these days.
Though growing Bonsai trees is a hobby practiced by many people around the world, its Asian origin is still obvious. Not surprisingly, the most impressive trees are to be found in collections of famous Japanese masters.
Japan, home to the world’s most beautiful Bonsai trees, is a place to have visited at least once in a lifetime. The quality (and quantity) of Bonsai trees, Japanese gardens and other cultural sites is simply overwhelming.
In this video we share fruiting and flowering Bonsai trees. Bonsai in full bloom, or Bonsai growing fruits (like apples or kaki) are a delight to watch!
The Taishoen garden is famous for its Shohin sized Bonsai trees. It is located in Shizuoka, right at the foot of mt. Fuji.
春花園Bonsai美術館 - Shunka-en is the Bonsai garden and museum set up by Bonsai master Kunio Kobayashi (four times winner of the Prime Ministers Award, the most prestigious price to be won in Japan).
広樹園 - Kojuen has a large collection of superb Shohin trees, both deciduous and coniferous, beautifully displayed in a Kyoto-urban garden setting.
In this article we share the main Bonsai events organized yearly in Japan. The level of Japanese Bonsai is superb, as can be seen in this video on the national Bonsai museum in Saitama.
大宮盆栽村 - Omiya has been an old time favorite destination for Bonsai enthusiasts traveling into Japan. The village is a pleasant neighborhood in Omiya (a suburb of Tokyo) that hosts five top Bonsai nurseries.
Uchiku-Tei is the Bonsai garden owned by mr. Seiji Morimae, a Bonsai artist specialized in Bonsai display and a well known trader of high-end Bonsai.
Aichien Bonsai Nursery (愛 知 園) is located in Nagoya, Japan and owned by Junichiro Tanaka. The collection of Bonsai trees is absolutely stunning.
Mr. Kimura's work is among the most famous and important of contemporary Bonsai in Japan. His new and radical approach to how he styled Bonsai was first seen as breaking with (too) many traditions, but soon he was widely recognized and respected.
香川県高松市鬼無町 - Less famous, but many times larger than and perhaps almost as beautiful as Omiya, Kinashi is a very impressive sight and surely worth some time in your travel itinerary.
盆栽美術館 大観 - The Taikan Bonsai museum is owned by Mr. Shinji Suzuki and is an absolutely stunning place. In my humble opinion its the best looking Bonsai garden in Japan and the museum is very well laid out.
An overview of some of the world's most beautiful Bonsai trees, in this top 20 video created by Bonsai Empire. The video is a collection of places we have visited in the past years.
The most popular fruiting Bonsai trees are the Crabapple, several Citrus varieties, Olive trees and the Pomegranate. But you could also try the Blueberry, Cherry or Quince.
Bonsai doesn't have to be expensive, as this video shows. We purchased a cheap nursery plant (an Ilex crenata or Japanese holly) and turned it into a sweet little Bonsai.
We categorized the tree species into Broadleaf evergreen (leaves year-round), Deciduous (sheds leaves in fall) and Conifers (with needles or scale-like foliage). If you need more help, try our Identify my Bonsai guide.
