I'm experimenting on some forsythia I found at a really good price. I know it's a shrub, but it's a deciduous one, so I hope that counts! They're really pretty as bonsai When I can I will post a photo.

Cool, please keep us posted! I took a whole load of winter-cuttings this year, trying to get them to root. Would be nice to make a merged truink of those indeed! (I won't because mine are too thick ). pictures yes, please!

yeah here in new york we have gone from 60F to 5F and are looking at 50F by next week.its quite a temp swing for 3 weeks and not good for outdoor bonsai im really worried . there is no snow cover either which otherwise i wouldnt worry as much...

being buried in snow is the best thing the snow insulates the trees keeping them at the freezing point. no snow means they are subjected to the air temp.i intentionaly burry my trees in snow to keep them safe

Yeah, agreed. Here however spring had pretty much started 2 weeks ago, with my strawberries in full flower, and the forsythia showing the first green & yellow in their buds. Then temps overnight dropped to about 14F (-10C). And only after a few days did we get snow. So I am not sure what happened to all the plants. We'll see I suppose. Just as crazy a winter as last year, when even some of the experts were caught unaware, and losses of over 50% of the trees occured for some.

yeah this winter has been on again, off again, I wouldn't be surprised if the trees and plants are all confused! I hope yours are ok.

How are your forsythia doing? I just put mine together tonight. I'm going to tie them tighter when I get some raffia.

I know that some of them are pretty thick, but there are a lot of little guys in there too. interested to see if the big ones will fuse. I saw two grown pines the other day, where one large branch had grown and fused with the neighbor pine, thought it was pretty neat.

cool thats a neat thing to see...pines can be fused also it just takes a long time ...up to 5 years for saplings

I can't believe how much growth you have on your forsythia already! Here we have been dipped in snow and ice once again. But you seem to have full on spring. Or did you put them inside?
