Hi guys, I have a new question I would like you to help,

How does a sunburn look like in an Acer Palmatum tree? I mean, which are the effects on its leaves?
I´m asking this because right now the tips and edges of some of my Arce´s leaves are drying and I´m suspecting it is due to an excess of sunlight. I´m I correct?

I would say no. I think it is more likely to be wind burn. My Acers are in full sun (when we get any) all the time. However if there is a strong wind then the edges will dry. It can also be when the pot gets too dry and then the leaves will burn. Peter Chan of Heron Bonsai has many Acers in his nursery and they are in full sun with no protection he has no problem with burned leaves.

These days haven´t been windy ones, so, based on what you have told me I´m gonna guess that this has happened due to dryness of the pot. So far it´s nothing critical, but I wanted to know the possible source of this problem before doing nothing.

OK, after my post I was looking at some of mine, and I have 4 together, all are in semi shade and one has dried edges of the leaves. It could have got a bit dry at sometime, but I very much doubt it is due to sunburn. My garden does get quite windy at times so a combination of wind and dry I think is the main cause.
You could de foliate and wait for new leaves, just take the damaged ones off leaving the stem.

sunburn on a maple most likely shows as the edges of the leafs drying out and curling..

i have that sometimes and my maples are all 100% out of the wind but most of the time in full sun..

I agree, but drying out is more likely to be the cause. I have two side by side and one has damage the other is fine.

Ok... Acers seem to be quite sensitive. The only good thing of having these symptoms it is that at least I can tell something is wrong with my acers. Now I know I should take special care with windy days and rigorously monitor the amount of water I´m giving them, as well as the frequency I water them.

Oh, and Cronic, yes, you are right too. The tips were not only drying, but curling as well. That said, I keep thinking that in my case is more likely due to lack of water than windy days. I've already taken care of this issue.

that's cause they are used to it..

i noticed my maples being more resistant to the sun this year than last year.. even the fresh new leafs..
while my new maple does have some sunburn..

my airlayer from a garden tree, taken last year, doesn't even fade colour.. he stays fresh minty green
(but that's a regular palmatum, so also the strongest species)

It is not too much wind or too much sun, but the roots not being able to supply sufficient water to the leaves.
There can be several reasons for that. They are nicely explained here:
