I look forward to the results in, let's say, 10 years from now. Or a few decades, if your goal is like that tree on your vlog.

Congrats. That is going in the right direction. Where are you located? (Are you in subtropics?) This is going to have a lot of growing to do!

Samantha, you are absolutely right. Ficus are, like beans and most of the plants around us, dicotyls. Meaning: Having two cotylons, or, in a dutch derived word I just made up, seed-lobs. All these plants sprout with two roundish leaves first which are actually the energy storing organs for the seed. From this, the first real leaves will grow once the plant has grown a root. A monocotyl grows very different. Grass for instance, is a monocotyl.

dicotyl:

Monocotyl (Corn in this case):

Well yes. Hopefully I have this time. Sometimes it's much more fun to make own mistakes than fix other's.

Thanks! I'm in London. I think I'll be able to put them outside in summer and for winter I have a large window and heating mat. Also I want to set up a growing light.

I love the evident geotropism in that corn.
Nature is so smart.

I don't know, ficus grow a bit faster than some trees. three, five years, then you can start to work with it, then add a bunch of seasons. ... patience ... A good idea, imho, you need a few seedlings,... cuttings, ... or what ever, to play with, sort of like, all the eggs in one basket. Maybe some other species, too.

how far do you want to take this Bonsai thing any way

Yes, so far it's very fast, 9mm in just 3 days!

Do you mean to practice in training other bonsai before these seedling grow big? Sounds like a good idea. What species would you recommend? I've got some room on balcony and here in London temperatures are 0..+5°C in winter and 20..25°C in summer.

Seedlings, sort of have a way , of, dying, about at the stage, of this seedling, is the most risky.

London's weather sounds like paradise to me. You might need to insulate the roots, sustained -7c and bellow, can be rough.

i like elms, tough little buggers.
