I'll be receiving 2 x 1 quart size trees in a week or so . Second tree will be grown in a large pot.
First tree is for landscape use and I would l would like your opinion as to whether I should let it grow naturally or wire it for some subtle shape while it's young and still flexible. Nothing extreme, still aiming for upright growth and mostly a normal tree. As a mature tree, I will attempt to stay on top of pruning, so it won't be going wild.

For garden trees ,niwaki, other technices are used than on bonsai. Wire is not normally used. Start study up on niwaki, Jake hobsons book is a good start.

I was just thinking a little S in the trunk to give it some character. It's just a yard tree.

I didn't ask you to decide what I like to look at. Do you not understand the concept of an opinion? It's real easy. Everyone can have one. Even you, if you try real hard. Watch, here's an example. It's my opinion that you are being obtuse. See, right on the spot, I gave an opinion. No teeth pulling involved at all. You can agree with it or not agree with it, because it's an opinion. Your opinion, if you are able to form one, doesn't have to have anything to do with what I think. So that's how it works. So in the case here of the landscape tree, all you had to do from the beginning was say if YOU thought a landscape tree looks better straight or with a bend in it. It should have been real easy. I'm sorry I made your day so difficult for you.

If you are able to form an S shape that is one possibility. In bonsai S shape is nothing to strive for. In Niwaki it is very poppular. I dont care about general rules. I like the S shape In both bonsai and niwaki.

Another possibility is to grow and cut your garden tree. After a few years in ground cut the leader just over an upward facing branch to form a new leader. Let grow for a few years and repeat. This technice makes the tree looks less attractive after cutting down, but forms a more attractive tree in the long run. But it takes many years. I would plant the tree in an 45 degree angle and stake the trunk to opposite 45 degrees for a big first curve. From there evaluate the situation every year. If the trunk is too straight cut If there are a possible new leader or stake If there are not.

It's a 1 quart plant, so I imagine it's going to be a twig, probably 1/4" thick. Should be simple to wire, I won't be cutting it unless it's too leggy to start with.
