Got this at a club meeting. Trying to decide on which way to go. I like his leaning trunk..im letting it grow for now. Any advice is welcome....other than "that's not bonsai, (not yet) plant it in the ground for ten years then ask, or it's an ok tree but it'll never be bonsai". Thanks ..

Such things are only said when someone posts a plant in a pot that's called a bonsai, but isn't, when something is so young and undeveloped that it needs to grow for another 10 years, or when something is not suitable and will never become a bonsai. Not sure why you are expecting such replies. Your tree does not fall in these categories.

However, it's not easy to give advice seeing only one 2D picture. Wouldn't it be better to ask this at the club where you got it?

Reading this post I really hope people are not scared to post in the forum. Sometimes things start and end up wit "this is not bonsai" just because some people nerver saw such or dont have the understanding but this does not mean everyone is not welcome here to obtain knowledge and how-tos. For me, yours is on a good path to bonsai, just look for inspirations and let your creative flow go out, I see many options in your tree. Keep up.

Auk, I will get info and assistance from the club, but I like to to get outside opinions from others as well. There are very knowledgeable people on these types of forums so I try to gather as much info as I can. One of the advantages I find in these forums is the opinions of people from around the globe and their different views and opinions on what bonsai is or should be.

I was kind of being a smarta$$ when I typed that. I see responses like that and wonder why someone would respond if they're only going to criticize and not offer an explanation to their response. But as one member informed me :" we tell it like it is here".

If it were mine i would airlayer it up abit and create a shohin and grow out the rest.

Maybe first one on the red line and have the shohin out of the trunk line going left of the blue line where you could do another airlayer and just grow that out for a while.

Enaisio, how long it would take to create those two left branches on your drawing?
Or is you thought about grafting them?

:-)

I would grow it in the ground for another 3 years to get thicker trunk, then airlayer a bit above the Rob´s red line and then start to build branches on the bare trunk for shohin size tree.
Good luck with any option you go for :)
