So I have 3 tree clippings and I'm keeping them in just 1in of water, root down. Do I keep them like this for long, or how long? I just ordered some Bonsai soil and will be planting them in semi-loose, specially prepared, soil... and I'm not sure when to transfer them! Help! =]

Lol, that's ok, I'll keep em in water until I get my soil in a few days and then just try to plant them - keep them indoors for now while the weather is cold in the mornings and trying to get them into a sill with plenty of sun. It's all I really know how to do at this point, I've never grown really anything before lol.

Well now you have me worried! Lol! Anyways, if they die, which I hoooope they don't, then I'll make sure to find out how to do it before I buy them and know the type of tree I'm buying and look up that instead of just free-forming it. I hope they live tho, *crosses fingers, we'll see.

Thanks.

We don't usually propagate a tree without knowing the species, even because some species are more suitable for bonsai, some are more suitable for ou climate, some accept a certain method of propagation some don't...

Like, cuttings on water, works well with fast rooting species, like Willow or Bougainville.
Some other species, may never root on water, some not even on substrate.

I see, I had no idea that was the case, I was just like Ooo, Bonsai tree, and they gave me clippings instead of the tree and I was like, I shoulda read what I was getting first lol. So, with all the diversity of chances for it to propagate I think I'll give them a 30% chance of success. But that's a beginners guess, I could be way off.

try rought sand... Cuttings don't need nutrients right away... just humidity.
