I'm creating a little 'zen' room in my house; a big fish tank, diffusers, etc etc. I would like at least 1 bonsai for it as a nice focal point. I am considering this ficus I found online, it will cost me $70 plus shipping. I know bonsai should be outside, but I would like at least one bonsai for this room. Would this be a good choice?

It's hardly a bonsai, very not zen, and a rip-off.

You should have asked this 2 weeks ago. I trimmed our livingroom figs, and I have a wheellbarrow full of ficus cuttings that were better than what you have there. You could have had those for free.

This is actually serious: Find someone who has a large ficus, and take cuttings. Willow-leaf ficus (Ficus benjamina) roots very easily in a jar of water. Also thick stems.

That's a good idea! So is it safe to assume you have a ficus growing indoors?? The more time I spend on here the more I realize bonsai + indoors= no good. I am contemplating getting a preserved bonsai as the focal point instead of keeping one indoors.

The ficus is outside whenever there is no longer any frost risk. Inside they are unhappy most of the time.

I was going through the grocery store and found a ficus in the floral section. It was a couple of bucks and now is about 25 years old, and not a bad tree. The grow fast enough and take indoors better than most. While the other trees get infected with spider mites, etc., this one never has a problem.

Find a local gardening store, get a cheap ficus, and don't do the online ripoffs. You know what the tree in front of you looks like, from every angle. You don't know what you will get mail order.
