You must ask what species it is BEFORE you buy it, so you know its requirements.

Looks like a xanthophyllum piperitum.

.. the type would be a pre-bonsai, or even young start material. I would not refer to it as a bonsai because there are a lot of requirements before a plant earns that label.

.. you were after the species. I second Auks guess: xanthophyllum piperitum. The common name is chinese pepper tree..

And this plant does not meet any of these requirements. It lacks everything that makes a tree a bonsai. That's not pedantic, it is just telling the truth.

I've often wondered why, when I look up Zanthoxylum piperitum, it does not look at all like the bonsai that are sold as Zanthoxylum piperitum.

I doubt it very much. I am growing operculicarya . They are really rare and hard to get.. Also, as a tropical dry-region succulent they are *very* deciduous and drought resistent. Something we know from the chinese pepper tree to not be the case. And of course, all websites about bonsai wil lhave to have mis-identified this plant.
