I need some help. I was given a jap maple that was put onto a rock very recently. The trunk was wired as well. Could it have been done too late and could the trunk have been damaged? It got a lot of rain the day before the leaves started curling up. Should I be worried? What can I do to help my tree as winter in almost upon us in S.A. I have cut the leaves back to 1 pair on each branch to try and help the roots.

Hm.. COULD be just a dry wind. If you think it is due to rootwork, treat the whole thing as a massive cutting. So,.. Keep in dappled shade, out of the wind, moist etc.

Hi there Leatherback. We haven't had much wind really. So I do think it must be either over watered or the roots have been damaged. I put it in the shade since I noticed the leaves this afternoon. Should I not water it for a day or 3 so that the soil can dry out a bit?

You don't say what country you are in, Northern or southern hemisphere? The way you are describing it is your summer. Youm must water as needed not to a schedule, If it is your summer then you should not have done it at this time of year.

South Africa hahaha. Ja ja ja I know. Not much of a country anymore in terms of some things. Still have some beauty and nature here at least.

I would say it is drought or real hot sun or something if there is not much wind. I may be wrong as i don't have pictures of your tree (i still will probably be wrong with them as well :D ) . But these are just my thoughts.

Thank you Bob. I am thinking it could be sun but I doubt it would be drought as it got a lot of rain the night before and the soil was extremely wet. That's why I was wondering if it was over watering maybe... I am leaving it to dry out a bit and have placed it in a shadier spot for the moment. I don't mind if all the leaves fall off now as long as I know it will be ok until spring.

It is unlikely to be too wet, as long as the soil is well draining then it would be fine. Shade it during the hottest part of the day. It should not be losing leaves, but in the circumstances it is going to. Don't allow it to dry out, and I would spray the leaves too.
I did see after that you had put SA.
