I bought this Juniper yesterday and don't know a lot about Bonsai but I want to learn. I was wondering if I should re-pot it or if the pot its in is fine now. Also there are a lot of rocks and I was wondering if that is ok for this plant.

Hi Brent - I would lose the rocks, see what the soil is like underneath, needs to be free draining and if in doubt change it, the pot it's in is OK for size until it has grown a good bit. It is not an indoor plant and must not be treated as such, needs to be outdoors now unless you are in really cold conditions, or keep in an unheated greenhouse until Spring

Ok thanks for the suggestion. I have it outside at the moment, I just had it inside because it was easier to take a picture

It is a juniper. That doesn't mean it is a bonsai. This is just a young cutting, without any bonsai characteristics, in a pot.

Well that's lame. I guess I have more to learn than I thought. So how do you tell the difference between a real bonsai plant and something like this?

I mean, there are loads, but the main differences at a glance are that mallsai have no taper and have a truly poor branch structure.

Bonsai is not a tree species, it is a set of techniques to develop suitable material into a miniaturized version of a real tree. The difference is that a bonsai looks like a tree, not like a year old cutting.
