The Showakinen Bonsai Collection in Tokyo is housed within the Showa Memorial Park, and shows a variety of bonsai trees that represent the history of the art.
Established to honor the Showa era (1926-1989), this collection features trees cultivated by renowned bonsai artists and rare specimens that have been preserved for future generations. Visitors can explore different styles and species, including pines, maples, junipers and azaleas. The collection is carefully maintained, with trees representing different eras of bonsai development. The display provides insight into the techniques used by bonsai masters, from tree shaping to container selection.
In addition to the permanent collection, the Showakinen Bonsai Collection hosts educational programs and workshops throughout the year. These hands-on sessions allow visitors to learn the basics of bonsai care, such as pruning and wiring, and gain a deeper understanding of the craft’s principles. Most are in Japanese so inquire before you signup.
The collection is a peaceful and informative stop for anyone interested in bonsai, whether they are beginners or seasoned practitioners. Its location in Tokyo also offers visitors a quiet retreat from the busy city, with the beautiful park surrounding the bonsai display adding to the experience.
