A little bit of rotten hawthorn iv been caving the last week but my question is Tanuki or not Tanuki?
Taboo practice I know and especially with a deciduous tree. Also dose the caving look naturel? its not finished but just thought I would throwing it out there.
Nice, in my eyes the job you did with the deadwood is remarkable. Now, as for doing or not the Tabuki technique I'd say go for it. Why not? Yes, it might be better recommended in conifers, yes it might also be consider a taboo technique by some purists... But what's the point in not taking chances or bending the rules a bit? I believe Bonsai is also a constant search for improvement and innovation. Besides, I think that respectable Bonsai masters as Kimura and Colin Lewis have already tried this technique with special success. A button as an example:

This tree was created using the Tanuki technique by Colin Lewis indeed. In any case, if you finally decide to give it a go, please, keep us all updated.
