Hello. I have just receivd 5 shohin chinese elm from United Kingdom to norway. They were 5 days in the mail, i now have dem under a shade net outside day and night. During the day the temperature is around 25c. At night it goes down to 10c. How do i cultivate them to Norwegian climate? Should i take them indoors at night? Or Indoors all the time?

What is the conditions you can offer the tree inside?

In my experience of Norway, you guys keep the indoor climate very hot and very dry the whole winter. If this is the environment you can offer inside, it is better left outside digged down in the ground with some wind and frost protection. An unheated greenhouse is proboably the best if you have.

Norway is a long country north south wise. I reccon it might be hard to overwinter this trees in far north. Where are you located?

Well, i live in a big mansion with a indoor greenhouse, where the roof of the greenhouse is all glass. There are humidifiers in the floor and fans circulationg air in the greenhouse. So there it will get 6-8 hours of sun. I can also controll the temperature in the greenhouse room. I can take som picture of the enviroment?

Outside only. You don't say what species they are, but there are very few species that will survive inside. If you have that amount of space then you must be able to keep them outside in the natural environment air humidity sunshine rain.

Well, i read chineese Elm and think he means ulmus parviflora.

Norway have quite Hard winters. I would be careful to recommend outside winter until we know where in Norway.

Outdoors might be hard on the tree. Better might be an unheated building, and maybe a very slight amount of heat to keep the room not too far below freezing. What you want is how to keep the trees alive, and you can't tell what that is until you have killed some.

I will repeat myself here and say find a local bonsai group and see what they do. Pay particular attention to the people who have a lot of older trees.
