I am a novice when it comes to creating bonsai, having only just ventured into this hobby. I have acquired a white pine from a nursery (sight unseen until I unpacked the box) and are now deciding on the steps I need to take and the time frames between those steps. This tree is about 15 inches high and the trunk makes up about 1/2 that height. It appears that this tree was grown from a graft. Yiu can see the graft about 2/3 of that way up the truck. Any help and suggestions greatly appreciated.

I would do nothing at this stage except for plant it in the ground or a bigger pot. Thay graft needs time to fuse totally. And you need to learn basic care.

Meanwhile study the tree and the art of bonsai and make up a plan for what you want to do with the tree. A long term plan. No hurry, there will be a few years to make up your plan.

The graft is a bit unsightly, quite high up on the trunk as well. Like Tropfrog said, let the tree grow and fuse well. The next steps then would be wiring the branches in position and in the future perhaps hide the graft a bit by creating deadwood for example. But you can't hide it completely I'm afraid.

The fact that the graft is quite high up gives a quite good oportunitie to hide it behind the first branches. In that xase the final design cannot bu much higher than it is today.
