Yews will back bud easily on very old wood, but it is not best kept inside as I expect you are.
I bought a couple of small trees a few weeks ago with buds breaking all down the trunk,
Geoff.

i know i have said that i only have an indoor space but i managed to scrap up an outdoor space. i will move it out fully after spring but have it in a winter frame or keep it indoors for the rooting stage? (indoor or outdoors for rooting?). i can move it out in spring and i will get a pollytunnel but not like a greenhouse, it will just cover the top, and let air circulate (the purpose of the pollytunnel is to stop people from jacking it.

thanks ;)

If it is rooted then it needs to be cool, so a frame the is cold would be fine, if it is not rooted then you could keep it in but cool not in a heated room

Yew is sensitive to frost at root-level. So try to not let the rootball freeze through.
Backbuds easily, particularely n branches of 2+ year old. This bark, when wiring, becarfull in spring: THe bark slips easily in early spring.

The reason i wish to grow a yew is to see if i can do and practice deadwood and jin in a few years. Also the wood is vey dense so is naturally quite resistant to rot but i will use lime sulfur as well. I think it would make a nice tall variant windswept style in a fe years or more.

They do not grow fast enough for what you want. Better find yourself an affordable collected plant, or dig one yourself from a hedgerow.
If you ever make it to this part of the world with transport, you can get one of mine, assuming they survive. I recently collected some 10 of them, all with 2-4 inch trunks, 25+ years old.

thanks, i guess i can afford to wait ten years, it will be good to know i grew it straight from a cutting. i dont think i will be able to go to the netherlands until 7 years from now, thank you for the offer. when i go to the netherlands (i've always wanted to go there along with other countries) i would be very happy to meet you, but that would definitely be rather a lot of time from now, but you never know. thanks.
