hi, my friend has a cherry tree in their garden, he said i could take some cuttings, would it be better to take these cuttings or would air layering be better? has anyone had much experience/success with either of these propagation methods?
I haven't tried air layering our garden cherry but my attempts at rooting cuttings all failed, and I usually have some success with most species. I think air layering would be worth trying, or see if you can find any seedlings in the garden - I potted one up a few years ago and it is doing well.
Many cherries in gardens are grown on wild rootstock, as the cultivated variety has poor roots. Taking cuttings I think will be a futile project; I would go for air layer, also because you can get thicker trunks straight away.
