a few years ago i bought a small 3-year old larch seedling that i planted in my garden.

for 3 years i wired some styling in it and pruned new shoots to keep growth close to the trunk

1,5 years ago, during a huge hail storm, half the tree broke off.. (4cm wide hail does that to a tree)
but the tree recovered and soon a natural shari appeared

this winter i dug it out and have a "nice" looking pre-bonsai

hehe..

well.. i did some minor styling on it (don't have pictures)
but in any case i have me a larch of about 50cm high and a good 4-5cm wide at the base... for 4€ :p

fun thing about this is, i know almost the complete history of the tree, which will be a cool thing if i'm able to turn it into a nice bonsai one day :p

Agreed, that's one of the main attractions to growing bonsai from seed, too.

And with Leatherback, I heard he has loads of seedlings.

Larch are great trees to start in the garden! So much growth and ability to withstand all types of adversity from nature. You will enjoy this tree for many years to come!
