I really think some advice given with no specifics on location can be not only useless, but fatal to some trees.
I explain; "XXX species should be in full sun at all times, even in winter because they are hardy."
PERFECT advice, IF you live in a temperate climate.
In Central Brazil, or Dubai, for instance, letting a bonsai in the sun in the summer will fry it.

Exposing most of the trees to full sun will fry them even in temperate cimate in the middle of summer :)

Yes it depends on your location. Most of my trees are in full sun when we have any all summer with no ill effects providing there is enough water. As high as 40 of course needs some shade if only to help keep some moisture in.

True, true. Sun is so different on the poles and on the equator. Different angle, intensity etc.

One thing to watch for in full sun is temperature of the pot. Around here (Birmingham, Alabama), full sun can heat the pot up to the point that the rootlets close to the edge of the pot are cooked and killed. We will be getting 100°F this summer and we just cut down a huge shade tree, and I am planning on putting up some kind of shade to replace the tree. Watering twice a day will help, but shade is mandatory.
