Can these screens be standard window screening. Stainless steel? Or do they have to be synthetic?

Better being plastic, and... Plastic mosquito nets can be bought by the roll, and are inexpensive. A couple of meters will last a looooong time.

Rust in the long run can destroy the mesh, certainly; but some metals, like lead, can be dangerous for the health of your plant.

Yes, the OP was talking about drainage mesh. That's why the mesh used in sieves are inox steel, no harm to the trees.

IF the OP was talking about mozzies mesh.. That is too fine and will block very quickly. You will need something with fairly large holes (Say, 2mm diamaeter)
