I have been walking to a lunch place for the past year and noticed a dead potted stump by the roadside. The pot seems to have been broken and thrown away. Just this past summer i noticed that there has been a sudden growth from one of the secondary trunks...I am wondering if I should collect this and try salvaging it and perhaps train it into a bonsai....its not your classic yamadori...

Do you think its worth a shot...

I would ot bother. All the growth comes from the roots. The main trunk is dead.

Yes that's what I thought as well for a year as i saw it everyday... the pictures are not telling the true story, but there is a small secondary trunk where all the growth is coming from... i was thinking if the main trunk can be carved into some deadwood style and the secondary trunk used to build the actual bonsai...

Hence, it is collected material. Like 'bonsai', the literal translation for Yamadori does not cover the meaning. This is not a yamadori - not even 'not a classic yamadori'.

I can see why you like the trunk - but it is dead so you cannot use it. The tree species doesn't seem very usable for bonsai either.

Look at this:

Berberis?
There however it lokos like the base of the plant is alive. I would give it a bit more time to decide which part still grow.

Yep, with a spread out base, which I like. I’ll observe this year, and if looks like worth it, I thought to dig it up on spring.
