Hello all, Happy new year!,

I am looking to expand my collection of trees, I currently have a very young juniper. I’m unsure of what kind to get next, a ficus, cypress, another grown juniper, anything etc. I’m not opposed to either indoor or outdoor. Just looking for reccomendations from what you guys like/don’t like so I can make my decision.

I would get a Fiscus. Because you have to keep your juniper outside all year, it's nice to have an indoor tree. It also requires a different type of maintenance which makes it interesting as well.

If you are serious about growing bonsai, I would not go for trees from another climatic zone than your own.

Yes, You can keep a ficus inside. But it will be very unhappy for most of the year unless you are in the tropics. You will have to take all sorts of steps in creating the right environment, to only have a tree that hardly develops due to lack of the right conditions.
If in temperature climates, stick to temperate species untill you have enough experience to judge whether you should get s tropical.

Good species are elm, larch, zelkova if you are just starting out.
