Anyone have experience with burning bush specimens found in the wild? There is one by my job that is at least 30 to 40 years old and has a great amount of low growth and lwith Deadwood and I see it as a opportunity. It's in an informal upright growth pattern. Single trunk

We all have our opinions. I think a bonsai should have a trunk or something resembling a central theme. The pictures of burning bush plants all have a lot of skinny branches and nothing resembling a trunk.

It would probably be gorgeous in the fall. Put it in a pot or whatever. I would, if I had room, but I would not call it bonsai.

I have one. not really found in the wild, but cut back from 4 metres tall in any case.

I would say they are great bonsai species. They do not however close cuts well, nor are branches once mature easy to place. So make clever cuts and wire when young

Very neat - thank you for that.

I am going to try to get a picture up today of the wild thing I found. I think with minor cuts - the tree could be a beautiful bush at the very least, and possibly bonsai material at the most to develop.

Like I said in the OP - it's very old - has character and I want it for my bonsai learning experience. I know the landscapers are going to rip it out of the ground soon because of the visible deadwood, and God forbid, a tree or bush have any atypical characteristics.

It's very old. And it's had its fair share of nature beat downs.
