TOPIC: Sunshine

Sunshine 3 months 3 weeks ago #56160

We have very hot summers here, with temperatures over 95F/35C for months. And, of course, sun to match.

For thirty years my neighbor to the west hasn't cut anything in his back yard and it has been a jungle, behind which the sun went around 3:00 so the bonsais got a good dose of morning sun, some noon day sun, and no direct sunlight in the afternoon or evening.

They just cut most of it down, leaving a couple of tall pine trees, and I expect some of the tall trees to go. So, when summer gets here in May the trees will be getting a whole lot of sun, and the hottest afternoon sun at that. I will probably water at least one more time. Will getting twice as much sun cause any problems? I have read about pots heating up and burning roots. Would that be an issue? How would I handle it? Should I start building some kind of sunscreen?

i get about 105*F/40.5*C sometimes even higher in our summers and never had an issue. yes pots get hot, soil drys out but i just make sure i keep everything watered as Geoff mentioned. i do water about twice a day on the regular sometimes even up to 3 times a day but almost all my trees seem to love it. i do have a Japanese maple that is a little more vulnerable so that one is placed in a location that only receives morning sun but even in the heat i just keep it moist so it doesn't get leaf scorch and all is good.
