I have a Japanese Holly Bonsai that seems to be looking unwell. I have attached some photos below but and as you can see a lot of the leaves are turning brown and dry (but not necessarily falling off). It also only appears to be like this on one side of the tree and I have no idea why.

I keep my bonsai on a mantelpiece, away from any radiators with plenty of natural light but not in direct sunlight all day. I water it every other day with rainwater. I've read in some places that you should water it every day but the moss on top of the soil always feels damp so I don't want to overdo it. It also seems to have a few flies on and around it - I've done some research and it could be gnats but I'm really not sure.

I can't work out if it's dehydrated, because like I said, the moss on top of the soil never feels dry when I go to water it every other day.

Any information would be greatly appreciated as I really want to save it!

Thank you!
