New Yamadori Questions was created by Si Guy

Hello guys, so as yamadori season is coming to an end here in Nova Scotia, I decided to get two more trees. I got another hawthorn, and also one which I thought was a bay tree. Someone told me that this plant that grows on my property is a bay leaf tree, so I believed them, even cooking with the leaves. After I dug up one of these trees for pre-bonsai, I did an internet search and found out that this kind of tree does not grow anywhere in the country I live in. Does anyone know if there is a frost hardy version of the tree? It smells exactly like bay leaves, but apparently bay trees die at -7C. I now wonder what I have been putting in my spaghetti for the last year!

Take a picture and submit it through Google Lens, or one of several plant oriented apps like PlantNet.

Ya, I will probably do that when it grows some leaves. It has a really weird root system, the trunk goes right into a large chunk of root. Like a bit base of solid root.

About 50% of my trees collected this year are showing signs of life. The one really good spruce I have is putting out new tips, should I think about removing some of the tips? My hawthorn is starting to leaf out. My first hawthorn is dead I think. I cut the tap root way too far up and I cut an upper branch because it was making the pot fall over. I now understand the basic idea of yamadori and am excited to do it again this fall and next spring!

I have discovered many "suckers" growing up from my full size 30 year old cherry tree's roots. I heard you can air layer these off the root and grow them as trees. (some bonsai some fruit trees.) Has anyone done this before?

My maples seedlings are doing fantastic. A squirrel ate 4 out of 5 of my apple seedlings though. the one I have seems healthy though.

Rocky mountain pine seedling is slowly growing. I realize this tree won't be big enough to do anything much with for most of my lifetime, (assuming it survives the warmer winters of NS) but is still fun to have.

I would not cut growing tips on a recently collected spruce. Let it recover.
